Sub: Provision for street lights on the road.

Dear Editor,

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I want to draw the attention of the authorities concerned towards the provision of street lights on the road leading to Naagswoti from Hetauda City. I want to apprise that Kamane is a densely populated suburb area with more than 500 houses on both sides of the road.

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has installed poles on either side of the road to supply light to the residents, but just poles are not enough. NEA is lacking in providing basic amenities to the residents. During these days, it is pitch dark after 7 p.m.. In addition to accidents, cases of thefts and robberies can also not be ruled out. Darkness may lead to any kind of mishappenings.

It may also be stated that many residents return to their homes at late hours in the night. The residents pay house tax to the Sub-Metropolitan City Office regularly but facilities of street lights are denied to them.

The matter was taken up with the authorities time and again; every time mere assurances were given but the problem persists in the same way as it was. I hope that if the letter is published in your esteemed newspaper, the authorities shall be awakened from their slumber and the problem will be finally solved.

Truly Yours,
Srijana Satyal

Sub : Problem of water supply in my locality

Sir,

I crave the hospitality of the columns of your esteemed newspaper to draw the attention of local authorities of  Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) towards the problem of water supply in our locality.

For the last seven days, the water supply in our colony has become very irregular. Out of the seven days, the supply was given three days only and that too for only one hour per day.

Yesterday, the water was supplied only for 35 minutes. When contacted, the Assistant Engineer concerned replied that due to some electricity problem the water supply has become irregular.

I was not satisfied with the reply. It appears that the Assistant Engineer concerned is not taking the problem seriously. In the summer season, water is the biggest necessity. I hope you will be kind enough to publish this letter in your daily, so that the higher authorities can solve this acute problem immediately and take action against those who are responsible for it.

Sincerely Yours,
Numa Limbu

Sub: Nuisance of beggars.

Sir,

I shall be thankful if you publish this letter in the columns of your esteemed newspaper. I would like to draw the attention of local authorities towards the increasing nuisance of beggars in our city.

Nowadays, the number of beggars has abruptly increased. Everywhere in the city-markets, parks outside a restaurant or even in streets you will find such obstinate beggars. The pity is that most of that are physically fit but begging is their profession. Some of them might be involved in other offences also. Some of the beggars suffer from highly infectious diseases such as leprosy, TB etc. It is necessary that that such cases be taken care of and be treated in General Hospital, and other able-bodied beggars be taken to task. Either they should do the given jobs or they must be punished by the Government, and they should not be allowed to make begging their profession.

I am sure, the authorities will positively take care of this increasing nuisance of beggars, at the earliest.

Yours Truly,
Nabina Thami

Sub: About the evils of dowry system

Sir,

Through the esteemed columns of your newspaper, I want to draw the attention of the public as well as the concerned authorities to the effects of dowry system.

Dowry system is one of the great social evils. It has led to the death of many young brides and ruined the life of thousands of girls. It spoils the lives of many people. Besides, Dowry has economic burden to the middle class families. For this reason, poor families have to borrow money or sell a piece of their property to give dowry. Many greedy people in our society demand dowry shamelessly.

In order to get rid of the evils caused by dowry system, all dowry seekers must be socially boycotted. The girls should refuse to marry boys who demand dowry. The boys should try to convince their elders that dowry is an evil. A strong public opinion should be built up against this evil. Different medias should be utilized to enlighten the masses about this nuisance. The Anti-Dowry Acts should be strongly implemented against dowry seekers.

I'd like to request the editor of this newspaper to give publicity to these views for the convenience of common people. I hope the concerned authorities should think about it seriously and make appropriate steps immediately.

Thanking you,

Faithfully Yours,
Sujit Jaiswal

Question 5. Nowadays, we see the rise in prices of edible things like Pulses, Onions, Oil and some other products. The layman is facing hardship on account of it. Subject : Rising prices of edible and essential commodities.

Respected sir/madam,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the Government and the concerned officials/authorities towards the miserable condition of the layman due to the increasing prices of edible things like pulses, onions, oils, etc.

Recently, the inflation has soared in 2022 causing a nightmare for the middle class, not to mention the terror the People Under ‘Below Poverty Line‘ are going through. Most commoners/middle-class salary earners have a fixed salary that does not seem to increase under the influence of inflation and thus the constant hike in prices of essential commodities like Pulses, Onions, and Oil are proving to be fatal for the commoners. The government has failed to hold the price rise. It has become very difficult to make both ends meet.

The salaried people are the worst sufferers. They cannot manage their household budget within their salaries. It is high time the government should take steps to control the rising prices.

I hope that the prestigious columns of your newspaper will help bring this issue to light and the concerned authorities will provide some relief on the same front.

Yours Faithfully,
Sabina Baral

Q. N. 6. Write a letter to the editor of any national newspaper complaining about the problem of traffic jam in your city.

Subject : About traffic jam in Kathmandu.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to draw attention to the serious issue of traffic congestion in our city. Anyone residing in Kathmandu knows that it is an everyday challenge to navigate through the heavy traffic, which is not just frustrating but also a waste of time and resources.

The problem has been exacerbated with the increasing number of vehicles, decreases in public transportation, and inadequate road infrastructure. Due to this, the traffic issue is not only limited to peak hours but has become a constant problem, no matter what time of day it is.

The impact of traffic congestion on people's daily lives is enormous. It affects people’s physical and mental health due to the stress it causes and puts a significant dent on productivity levels. Furthermore, it also affects our economy as it lowers the delivery time of goods, increases fuel expenses, and discourages tourism.

We need to take immediate action to mitigate this problem to alleviate its damaging effects on our daily lives. A few measures can include promoting carpooling, constructing new roads and bridges connecting key areas or public transportation. We must encourage the use of public transportation and support the shift towards sustainable modes of transport.

It is high time that we take collective responsibility and work towards making our city a better place. I urge the authorities and fellow citizens to collaborate and bring about the necessary improvements to ensure smooth and efficient traffic movement.

Sincerely,

Barsha Shah

Q. N. 7. Write a letter to the editor of any national newspaper about the pressing problem of water scarcity in your locality.

Koteshwor, Kathmandu

Dear Sir,

Through this letter I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities to the pressing problem of water scarcity in our locality. The residents have been facing water scarcity for a long time. If this goes on unchecked, people are likely to fight with each other for some trickles of water.

The water tank cannot hold enough water to cater for the needs of the residents. Despite this situation, the residents are not conserving water. Most of them are wasting water while bathing, washing clothes and utensils and gardening.

In this context, I have some suggestions to offer to solve the problem immediately. I request you to call a

general meeting of the residents to discuss the issue. It would be much better if we may take the help of local cable TV and community radio to spread the message of conserving water among the residents of our locality.

The residents should be sensitized to conserve water while bathing, cooking, washing clothes and utensils. If we organize a door to door campaign, it is sure to make the residents aware of the need for conserving water.

Water conservation experts may be invited to make us aware of various methods and technologies available to conserve water. We should encourage the practice of reusing water among the residents. Had we gone for rain water harvesting techniques only. It would certainly have lessened the crisis to some extent.

Finally. I hope that some immediate steps will be taken to address the issue.

Thanking You

Yours truly,

Rujuna Manandhar
